Our Speakers

Mehdi Fasihi is a lecturer at University of Tehran anda research fellow at the School of Engineering of Tufts University. He received his Ph.D. at Delft University of Technology, where he was advised by Marc J. de Vries and Ibo van de Poel in the field of ethics of water governance and philosophy of technology. His current research foci iswater conflict, policy analysis and water diplomacy. He has published articles in these areas in journals such as Science and Engineering Ethics, Water Supply (IWA) and Stochastic Environmental Research Risk Assessment. In his postdoc project (at Tufts University), he investigated the issues of ‘complexity’, ‘pragmatism’ and the Enabling Conditions for negotiated cooperation of trans-jurisdictional water governance. Mehdi is a socio-technical analyst who can do research across disciplines with elaborate experience in working from inter- national, to provincial, to enterprise levels. Before arriving at Delft University of Technology, Tufts University and University of Tehran, as a chartered engineer he was a project manager in the consultant engineering company of PayandabTavan. He also worked in IWPCo as a design engineer in the field of renewable energy. Base on his vocational background, he is bringing water problems to other trans-disciplinary teams on the complex issues related to (water) governance concentrated on the socio-technical systems. He has broad interests in the domain of negotiation, actor-network analysis, development and institutions. As a water governance expert, he has played out an integrated method to frame the connections between practices, their roles and (normative structural and directive) rules of the actors during the development processes.

Ibo van de Poel is Anthoni van Leeuwenhoek professor at Delft University of Technology; an exclusive professorship for excellent young researchers. He is an internationally leading scholar in Design for values, responsibility issues in engineering, and in technology as a form of social experimentation. Van de Poel studied philosophy of science, technology and society, with a propaedeutic exam in mechanical engineering at the University of Twente. In 1998, he obtained his PhD in science and technology studies (STS) with a dissertation on the dynamic of technological development; his supervisor was prof. A. Rip.
